Excerpt from emergency preparedness email in my work inbox:
Remember, an emergency kit is an individual responsibility. It is only intended to meet basic needs and you are the best judge of your needs. Keep it small and light, because you may be carrying it up and down stairs or all the way home. You can include in your kit or have on hand comfortable shoes, socks, and clothing. Also, you should keep on hand enough cash to get you home by taxi (do not include cash in your emergency kit.). As a reminder the following are recommended as supplies for the Personal Emergency Kits:
- Zippered Tote Bag.
- Emergency Blanket.
- Emergency Poncho.
- Small Flashlight.
- Batteries.
- Light sticks (2-3).
- Gloves.
- N95 Paper Dust Masks (2).
- Safety Goggles.
- Moist Towelettes, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, and other personal hygiene items.
- Whistle.
- Water.
- Nonperishable Food.
- Other (e.g., prescription glasses, sunglasses, 3 day supply of medications, battery powdered radio, scissors, multi-tool, pen and notepad, laminated card with contacts (phone numbers and addresses of friend and family), first aid kit, etc.)

The stuff I do is really cool, and we are very committed to keeping the public safe as they move around the country. But, well, the security people. These are the people that have created things like public shoe removal lines and imposed rules like 4 packs of matches are okay but bic lighters are not. But they don't just stop with the public, they take care of their own. A snippet from something recent regarding a routine drill:
"Everyone did a good job of leaving the building; however, there were several issues noted by the emergency wardens. These include going down the stairs with open containers of beverages and individuals refusing to evacuate or hiding in the restrooms.
The potential for injury with spilling beverages in the stairwells is high, please leave them behind when you evacuate. If you carry water due to the heat, use a closed container with a screw type cap. Also, all persons have a responsibility to evacuate. Do not take refuge in conference rooms, restrooms, or closets, while the wardens try to check all parts of the floor."
